Why Edinson Cavani is out of Man Utd squad to face Southampton

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has revealed that Edinson Cavani picked up a groin injury in their final training session before facing Southampton on Saturday.

The Uruguayan was given the nod over Cristiano Ronaldo for the Red Devils' 1-1 draw at Burnley on Tuesday, but was not named in the matchday squad to play the Saints.

Rangnick told MUTV that Cavani will miss out completely due to a groin issue.

“I decided to start with Cristiano today in the home game. Edi, unfortunately, had to pull out after training last night,” he said.

“It was some groin problems. He had treatment the whole night and the whole morning but, in the end, he just said he’s not available.”

Ronaldo's return to the side in place of Cavani is the only change that Rangnick has made to the lineup that started Tuesday's draw at Turf Moor.

Man Utd dominated the first half and had the ball in the net three times, though they only scored one legal goal. An early second-half equaliser from Jay Rodriguez saw Burnley claw their way back into the match and put a dampener on what had initially been a strong showing from United.
