Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans has admitted he will ‘see what happens’ in summer with regard to his uncertain future, reiterating his desire to play Champions League football.
Tielemans is out of contract with the Foxes in 2023, which realistically means the coming transfer window is the club’s last chance to command a decent fee for the Belgium international.
90min understands that Tielemans is not interested in extending his Leicester contract and has rejected the offer of fresh terms as he weighs up other options amid interest in his services from some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
Speaking about his future while on international duty, the 24-year-old pledged his commitment to Leicester for the rest of this season. But suggested that he will have some thinking to do in the summer, even hinting at a free transfer in 2023 instead if no deal materialises sooner.
“I don’t worry about [transfer rumours]. I want to get the most out of myself this season and finish as high as possible with the team,” Tielemans said.
“Of course, I want to play in the Champions League, just like any footballer. Am I ready for a European top club? I’m ready to get the best out of my career. We’ll see what happens next summer, or the summer after that.”
Earlier this month, Tielemans insisted he is happy at Leicester – both on and off the pitch – and is in no rush to leave. He also explained that talks between the club and his representatives are ongoing, but stressed that he will take time to assess what options are available.
“My contract expires in 2023 and it’s not that I absolutely want to leave. I haven’t made my decision yet. If I have to stay another year, I will gladly do so,” the player said.
“There are talks between the club and my advisors. That will remain so. It’s not that I’m ignoring the club. I will study my options in the summer and make a decision.”
