Manchester United 1 Basle 1

While it was a night to remember for Gary Neville, it was one to forget for virtually everyone else connected with Manchester United.

The England defender, captaining the side in the absence of the injured Roy Keane, earned a point for the Red Devils with their 53rd minute equaliser against Basle in the Champions League at Old Trafford.

It was only Neville's fourth goal for United in 386 appearances, 77 of them in the Champions League.

Neville's goals are collector's items, this was only his fourth for the club with the last time he hit the target back in January 2001.

The goal for the player who has made more Champions League appearances than anyone else was even rarer, scored with his less favoured left foot.

Darren Fletcher, making a sound debut for United, crossed the ball from the right.

While Diego Forlan failed to control it, the Basle defence made a hash of clearing. It fell for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to nod down and Neville scored with a 20-yard drive, the ball being deflected past Pascal Zuberbuhler, before nestling in the net.

United have already qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition and their performance reflected the situation throughout the first half.

They were hit by the classic counter punch as Basle took a 13th minute lead.

Julio Rossi chased a long ball upfield and, despite being covered by two United defenders, he managed to turn the ball back to Sebastian Barberis on the right.

United defenders Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville failed to cut out Barberis' cross and Christian Gimenez stole in between them to score with a left-foot half-volley from eight yards.

United's only other real chance of the game came six minutes from time from a rasping 25-yard right-foot shot which Zuberbuhler took at the second attempt, and the player to fire in the effort....why Gary Neville of course.
