A late Diego Forlan strike secured a narrow win for Manchester United in their latest Champions League Group E clash at Panathinaikos.

The victory ensures United, along with Stuttgart who beat Rangers 1-0, have won through to the last 16 of the competition.

United thrashed the Greek side 5-0 at Old Trafford in September but Sir Alex Ferguson's side struggled to reproduce that form in a half-empty stadium in Athens.

The only goal of the game came with just five minutes left when Forlan raced on to David Bellion's pass before sliding a shot past Antonis Nikopolidis A lack-lustre first half saw few chances with Forlan having a 20-yard effort easily turned away by Nikopolidis in the 27th minute while Cristiano Ronaldo had several teasing crosses that came to nothing.

However, United stepped up the pace after the interval and Kleberson forced Nikopolidis into a sharp save in the 59th minute after more good play by Ronaldo.

Two minutes later Forlan went close to breaking the deadlock but his shot crept just past the post after good work by Ryan Giggs.

Panathinaikos also looked much livelier in the second half and Markus Munch almost caught Tim Howard out with a 66th minute effort before Giggs was unable to divert Ronaldo's cross goalwards.

With 15 minutes left Forlan again went close as his side flashed just wide of the post after great play by Quinton Fortune but it was the Uruguayan who eventually scored the winning goal with just five minutes left.
