Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick will remain in charge for Saturday's crucial visit to Chelsea, despite severe external pressure following Sunday's 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth.

The United board has decided to back the former midfielder to turn form around, with Carrick taking first-team training at Carrington as normal.

The Red Devils sit just one point clear of the relegation places after taking seven points from their opening eight league fixtures, marking their worst start to a top-flight campaign in 40 years.

Speaking on the squad's accountability following the Bournemouth defeat, former United forward Wayne Rooney criticised the players' response.

"The players haven't got a leg to stand on," he said. "What's not fair is the performances they are giving.

"I looked at the fans, you could see the pain and anger in their faces when those players are walking around the football pitch."
