Rooney apologises to Sesko

Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney publicly apologised to striker Benjamin Sesko, admitting he had misjudged the forward's recent absences.

Sesko was left out of United's matchday squad against Fulham and subsequently withdrew from the Slovenia national camp.

Speaking on the Stick to United podcast, Rooney admitted his previous criticism was unfair after medical details confirmed Sesko has been managing a persistent, atypical shin problem since pre-season.

Rooney noted that when dealing with long-term bone or stress complaints, players cannot be faulted for missing fixtures.

"If it's long-term, then I suppose I should apologise..." he said. "So, I apologise, Sesko. I apologise if I misjudged you. Sorry."

The 23-year-old Slovenian forward remains at Carrington undergoing specialised rehabilitation under United's medical staff.

Michael Carrick's side, who have won just one of their opening five league fixtures, are hoping Sesko will avoid surgery and return to full fitness in the coming weeks to bolster a light forward line.
